Leslie McCumber, 72 and Skip Nadeau, 73, U.S. Air Force 1967 - 71.
Leslie is originally from Boston, Massachusetts and Skip from Hondo, Texas.
“I started college but it just didn’t work for me,” said Leslie,” so I didn’t know what else to do. My dad and brother were in the Army and my mom was a Marine in World War II, so I decided to join the military. It’s the best thing I ever did in my life.”
Leslie became a medic with assignments at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, then to Clark Air Base in the Philippines, and then returning to Lackland.
Skip said he chose the Air Force for its educational opportunities. He entered the aircraft maintenance career field and became an aircraft crew chief. He served in Vietnam at Bien Hoa Air Base and Phu Loi Base Camp north of Saigon. His last assignment was as crew chief for B-52 bombers at Carswell AFB, outside Ft. Worth, TX.
They both served in the Air Force during the same years but never met until a blind date in 1980.
“I opened the door and immediately knew I was going to marry him,” Leslie said.
They moved to Boise in 1983 and both joined the Idaho Air National Guard for four years.
Leslie vividly recalled that while she was going through basic training her Military Training Instructor caught her chewing gum one day. As punishment she had to walk around the squadron area stopping people she encountered, telling them she had been caught chewing gum and that she was very sorry.
Skip lives at the State Veterans Home while Leslie maintains their home in Boise. They have been married 38 years.
