Ray Allen, 81, U.S. Navy 1964 - 66.
Allen is from Caldwell, Idaho, a short distance west of Boise. Before joining the Navy, he served three years in the Idaho National Guard as a flight operations specialist.
He joined the Navy in 1964 and said he was involuntarily extended due to the Vietnam War until 1966. He served as a personnel specialist. He was aboard the U.S.S Midway, assigned to an aerial photo squadron.
His most memorable moment in the Navy was meeting and shaking hands with Jimmy Doolittle, the commander of the Doolittle Raiders who launched their B-25 bombers from the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet and bombed mainland Japan in 1942, five months after Japan bomber Pearl Harbor.
“He was General Doolittle and we didn’t realize that at the time. Here he was, just like the civilian contractors, with no insignia or anything of any type on and just roaming around the ship at his leisure.”
Allen said the day after leaving the Navy he enrolled in Boise College, now known as Boise State University. He graduated with a degree in education and went to work with the postal service.
