    Kathy Moore, 75, U.S. Navy, 1964 – 65.

Moore enlisted in her hometown of Portland, Oregon. She initially planned on joining the Air Force but said her decision was swayed to join the Navy by her two favorite uncles. She served as a Navy AZ. The AZ skill field is listed in the Aviation Maintenance Administration, Navy Occupational Specialty (NOS) A440. AZ’s perform a variety of clerical, administrative and managerial duties necessary to keep aircraft maintenance activities running efficiently.

"I had to know everything from A to Z for the aircraft we kept maintenance records on, “ said Moore.

She fell in love with and eventually married her boss. When she became pregnant, following Navy rules at the time, she left active duty. But as Moore tells it, her husband remained in the Navy for 30 years, and as far as she’s concerned she spent 30 years in the Navy as well. She recalls she could spit shine her husband’s dress shoes better than he could. When he needed to look good, he called on her skills and expertise.
Their assignments took them to Japan, Hawaii, Whidbey Island, Washington, and Adak Island, Alaska in the Aleutian chain, 1200 miles southwest of Anchorage. She said what was most noteworthy about their Navy life is that all their assignments allowed the family to remain together.

Moore said her husband passed away 30 years ago and she continued living in Portland another 20. She came to Boise to be with her daughter and grandchildren. She proudly claims teaching her grandson to drive. The best training she received in the Navy was in organizational management, skills she used all her life.

(Moore was interviewed and photographed on September 5, 2019. She passed away on October 2, 2019).
