John Mouw, 83, U S Army, 1954 - 57.
Born and raised in Redmond, Washington Mouw said his decision to enlist in the Army was more attractive than the thought of going to prison. He said local police were trying to arrest him and he went to Seattle to enlist.
His recruiter provided him a test he said looked like a word test out of Readers Digest magazine. He claims he did so well on the test that the Military Police made a vigorous effort to recruit him. The irony of it all was not lost on him. He felt suspiciously pressured by the Military Police and passed on their offer. The Army sent him to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for training as a radio traffic analyst. He was then assigned to the Army Security Agency and sent to Korea.
He says he spent 16 months in Korea analyzing communications and writing reports. He returned stateside to Ft. Meade, MD, where he reviewed the communications reports from Korea.
Mouw left the Army and used his G.I. Bill benefits to go to college at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. He studied pre-law in preparation for law school.
His plans for law school went astray when the Travelers Insurance Company offered him a job as a claim’s adjuster. He and his wife came to Boise in 1960 when there was only about 33,000 people he says. He and his wife raised four children. He’s lived in Boise most of his life and is a recent resident of the Veterans Home.
