U.S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Daniel B. Bowler, the platoon sergeant for Weapons Platoon, Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, and a native of McMinnville, Ore., places the dog tag of his former company commanding officer, fallen Lt. Col. Joseph Trane McCloud, on a battlefield cross following a memorial run here, June 1, 2012, to honor the sacrifices of 116 men from 3rd Marines who died during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. McCloud, a 39-year-old native of Grosse Pointe, Mich., died in a helicopter crash, Dec. 3, 2006, while conducting combat operations with 2/3 in Al Anbar province, Iraq. The infantry regiment's three battalions began supporting Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom in 2004 and during this course became the highest-deployed Marine infantry regiment. The regiment's 3rd Battalion recently returned from its third Afghanistan tour, marking the last scheduled combat deployment there for 3rd Marines.
