WASHINGTON (Dec. 5, 2019) Lt. Josh Waters, assigned to the Navy Department Board of Decorations and Medals, welcomes family and friends of the late Lt. Thomas Evert to a Distinguished Flying Cross award ceremony in the capital building Dec. 5. Evert was posthumously awarded the Flying Cross when he and his PB4Y Liberator bomber crew sank a German U-boat during World War II. He and the crew later perished during a subsequent mission. Due to distinguished acts of heroism while participating in an aerial fight, Evert was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and each member of the crew was awarded the Air Medal. Naval History and Heritage Command located at the Washington Navy Yard, is responsible for the preservation, analysis and dissemination of U.S. naval history and eritage.
