Kennedy CVN-79 Reactor Department Sailors stand with their reenlistment check onboard the Battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64) after their group reenlistment. Thirty-nine Sailors reenlisted for a combined 232 years and advancing 38 Sailors to Petty Officer Second Class. The Sailors received a combined selective reenlistment bonus totaling $2,388,272.51 under the Selective Reenlistment Bonuses (SRB) and Selective Training and Reenlistment programs. SRBs are reenlistment incentives used to maintain desired manning in specific ratings and NEC'S. SRB levels are subject to change in response to the needs of the Navy in managing community manning. Kennedy is the second ship in the next-generation USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78)-class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The aircraft carrier is named after John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, who served in office from January 1961 to November 1963. This is the second U.S. aircraft carrier named for President Kennedy, with the former being the last conventionally powered carrier, CV-67, which served from 1968 to 2007.
