“I used to make lists as a kid—all the way till now—of things I want to do. It’s a life list: things I want to accomplish and things that bring me joy. And flying brought me joy. I think I went skydiving when I was 23 for my birthday and I was like, ‘man, I love being in this plane!’ I couldn’t afford it at the time because flying hours obviously are expensive. But I still had it on my list. I was in a bad accident and I had a few surgeries later down the road and it didn’t go well. I didn’t think, at one point, I would be walking again. There was one point where I didn’t think I’d even be here. With that being said, I think when you have those moments you put things in perspective real quick. But you have to have those moments sometimes. I wish it didn’t take those moments to get a certain perspective on life, but because I’ve had those, I changed everything in my life to a certain degree. I said, ‘I’m just going to go after what I want, not what people want for me.’ And that was flying. So, I started looking into it and some mentors came into my life and guided me in that direction and encouraged me to go after it because it was not accepted by the majority of the people in my life. That’s the thing to remember as women is that the majority of the things that we pick are not going to be accepted until we succeed. Then we will be celebrated.”
