One mission, many faces – Capt. Guy Whittaker

This project highlights the stories of humans from the Global Coalition supporting the fight against terrorism.

“I’ve always had an interest in the military. I loved, growing up, watching black and white films and reading books about the army. Then, I went to a military school when I was 16. So, we have a military high school called Welbeck College and that’s where I was educated. And that was it, really, that’s where my journey started. After school, and then university I joined the army and went to Sandhurst. This was something that I always really wanted to do and it gave me the opportunity to do all the things that I enjoy with the sports, engineering and the social aspects as well. Early on in my career I was able to become an advocate for this passion of mine by participating in a TV programme about the joining the British army. So, I was at a training regiment and a TV station wanted to do a documentary, and I was told that my platoon was going to be filmed. For six months this TV crew followed around my platoon, and it was really interesting. Being behind your desk trying to do your normal work but also having a camera in front of you, watching everything that you do. It was definitely a memorable experience. Looking back on it, it was weird watching yourself back a few months later. Watching your past six months and how the recruits were doing and developing. The focus was just about everything that went on in basic training. So it’s just following the lives of the recruits, you know, for four or six months watching them from the start; from being a civilian up to being a fully trained soldier. Some of the guys in the platoon were quite interesting, had quite challenging backgrounds. It’s a privilege to be able to watch their development and see how they grow as individuals. Watching them all pass out at the end of their training, and seeing the parents proud is what it’s all about.”
