U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Jeff Starben, a team leader with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, currently assigned to 3rd Marine Division under the unit deployment program, pauses during live-fire maneuver drills on Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan, June 18, 2020. “When I was a junior Marine, I looked up to all the team leaders and squad leaders I had, and I thought they were some of the most badass people I had ever seen,” said Starben, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina. “They could lift the heaviest weight and knew everything they needed to know about being an infantryman. I thought they were the coolest people to ever walk this earth and I wanted to be just like them.” The live-fire and maneuver range provides Marines with an opportunity to refine their skills working together as a unit and maneuvering, communicating and firing at the squad and platoon levels.
