FORT BENNING, Ga. – In a photo taken shortly after Hurricane Michael struck the Florida panhandle in October 2018, loose timbers are part of the storm damage wrought at the Destin Army Recreation Area, a scenic resort in the Florida panhandle, about 220 miles south of Fort Benning. The resort is popular with members of the U.S. military community. Hurricane Michael did major damage to the resort's marina, seawall and boating channel. Work has begun on repairing the seawall. The marina was repaired last year. Plans also call for a project that will eventually dredge the boating channel.
