The Mammoth Pool Campground in the Sierra National Forest, Fresno County, California, is surrounded by fire and blistering smoke as a California Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk approaches a designated zone where people were trapped by the Creek Fire Sept. 6, 2020. For approximately 10 hours, the Black Hawk and a Cal Guard CH-47 Chinook alternated rescuing nearly 250 people who couldn’t escape the fast-approaching fire. The Creek Fire ignited Sept. 4 and the following day it torched more than 45,000 acres. A day later in nearly doubled, burning 81,000 acres.
