U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Joseph Rosamond reflects on a Sept. 5, 2020, rescue mission in the Sierra National Forest, Fresno County, California. He was pilot-in-command of his CH-47 Chinook when he flew into a dangerous situation to rescue hundreds of people trapped by the Creek Fire. “It was emotional especially when I looked (behind me) and saw children,” said Rosamond. “Children who are the same age as my children.” Rosamond and pilot Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brady Hlebain, with crew members Sgts. George Esquivel and Cameron Powell, bravely dared treacherous conditions to complete the rescue mission. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Ryan Sheldon)
