FORT BENNING, Ga. – A column of eight-wheeled Stryker combat vehicles moves along a road at Fort Benning Sept. 2 during training for students enrolled in the Scout Leader Course. The Stryker, along with the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the humvee, is one of the combat vehicles that cavalry scouts may serve with when they complete their training. Training enlisted recruits to become cavalry scouts, and training other recruits to become Armor crewmen, is the work of the 194th Armored Brigade, part of Fort Benning's U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence. The training period for both cavalry scouts and Armor crewmen was extended to 22 weeks last fall, and brigade leaders say the longer span is resulting in Soldiers who by graduation are more proficient, more lethal, and more physically fit than the earlier, shorter training periods allowed. They discuss those benefits in a video that was prepared for viewing by participants of the recent 2020 Virtual Maneuver Warfighter Conference, which MCoE hosted.
