Wreckage of the S.S. Atlantus located off of Sunset Beach, Cape May, N.J., Sept. 3, 2020. The ship, which was built out of concrete to save steel for the war effort, was constructed for the World War I Emergency Fleet by the Liberty Ship Building Company in Brunswick, Ga. It was launched Dec. 5, 1918, and transported American troops back home from Europe. Two years later, it was retired. In 1926, it was bought to be used as a ferry dock for the ferry that ran between Cape May, N.J., and Lewes, Del. During a storm, the Atlantus broke free of its moorings and ran aground June 8, 1926. Attempts were made to free the ship, but none succeeded. (New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs photo by Mark C. Olsen)
