View of Battery 223 with the Cape May Lighthouse in the background located in Lower Township, N.J., Sept. 3, 2020. The battery was built in 1943 and was one of three 200-series fortifications that were part of the Delaware Bay harbor defense system. The battery had two 6-inch guns, which had a nine-mile range, and had six-foot thick reinforced concrete walls designed to survive direct hits from battleships and aircraft. Battery 223 was decommissioned in 1944. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places June 25, 2008. (New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs photo by Mark C. Olsen)
