“I consider it an honor to be the first impression of the Marine Corps for these future leaders of the Navy,” said Staff Sgt. Kayla M. Erianne, a Marine Corps Drill Instructor (DI) assigned to Officer Training Command Newport (OTCN), Rhode Island. “I volunteered to come to Newport to increase our impact as DI’s by developing and mentoring these young leaders who will eventually lead the force and fleet.
Erianne earned the 2020 Sergeant Harry D. Myers Logistics Combat Element Marine of the Year award and was selected for advancement to gunnery sergeant. She is a native of Bridgeton, New Jersey.
At Officer Candidate School (OCS), drill instructors play a significant role in instilling discipline, military bearing, building esprit de corps and enforcing the standard with physical fitness.
OCS morally, mentally and physically develops civilians and fleet Sailors into newly commissioned officers and imbues them with the highest ideals of honor, courage and commitment for service in the fleet as Naval officers. (U.S. Navy photo by Darwin Lam)
