Ray Leung, Naval Station Great Lakes commanding officer, presented a certificate of appreciation to Mike Belmonte, Great Lakes Fire & Emergency Services, in recognition of his volunteerism to serve as documentation unit leader with the California Interagency Type 2 IMT in response to the Dolan wildfire in Big Sur, Calif. from September 23 to October 15 this year. As documentation unit leader, Belmonte led a team of 32 individuals in providing critical support to over 1,200 first responders in fighting a wildfire that, at the time, had burned over 100,000 acres, destroyed or damaged 176 residences and 130 commericial structures and injured 17 firefighters. On October 2, Belmonte agreed to extend his voluntary deployment to support moving the command post and transition of command to the New York Fire Department (FDNY) Type 2 IMT consisting of 57 individuals. Belmonte was the first outsider to ever work with the FDNY Type 2 IMT. He did this all while on leave from his job at Naval Station Great Lakes. (U.S. Navy photo by John Sheppard/Released)
