First Lt. Carl V. Chatham, of Southaven, receives his first salute from Staff Sgt. Jeremy M. Mills, 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, Mississippi Army National Guard, following his direct appointment as a first lieutenant into the Army's judge advocate general corps. A longstanding military tradition holds that the first enlisted soldier to salute a newly-commissioned officer receives a silver dollar as a memento of the occasion.
