Lou LeGarie, left, visits with old friend John Bates at the Palo Alto Veterans Center. In August of 1967, Bates and his Marine platoon were on an operation in Antenna Valley when he he was hit by enemy fire. As he sought cover, he fell in a Punji stake trap, stepped on one and it went straight through his foot. LeGarie dressed the wound, and the two became lifelong friends.
