Pfc. Richard Idstein in his U.S. Army uniform during World War Two. The Chicago native served in an intelligence and reconnaissance squad with the 106th Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge. The battle started December 16th, 1944 and ended January 25th, 1945. Soldiers endured record-breaking cold weather and suffered from cold weather injuries including frostbite and trench foot. According to the Department of Defense approximately 19,000 Soldiers were killed, 47, 500 wounded and over 23,000 listed as missing in action.
