Blanchard was in Trail to observe soldiers from the 204th Engineer Company, Washington Army National Guard, as they participated in Kootenay Castor 2012. Kootenay Castor is a two week combined training exercise for combat engineers from the Washington Army National Guard and the Canadian Army.
