FORT BENNING, Ga. – Command Sgt. Maj. Robert K. "Rob" Fortenberry (right), senior enlisted leader of the U.S. Army Infantry School, talks with Command Sgt. Maj. Todd Sims of U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) Jan. 29 at Fort Benning. Sims was among senior enlisted leaders from various units, including XVIII Airborne Corps, who watched new Infantry recruits go through "The First 100 Yards," a set of team-building events designed to get them off to a proper start on their first day of training. Fortenberry, a veteran Infantryman who retires this summer after more than 30 years in the Army, had a central role in developing the new method, which replaces the traditional "shark attack" in which new recruits were greeted by snarling drill sergeants shouting belittling comments. Fortenberry became the Infantry School's senior enlisted leader in 2019 and is scheduled to relinquish his responsibilities in a ceremony here Feb. 22.
