President-elect John F. Kennedy wrote in his "Sports Illustrated" magazine an article "The Soft American" in December 1961: "Thus, in a very real and immediate sense, our growing softness, our increasing lack of physical fitness, is a menace to our security." In early 1963, Kennedy revived President Theodore's direction for all Marine lieutenants and captains to complete 50 miles in less than 20 hours over no more than three days for his current Marines and challenged all Americans to consider it.
