President John F. Kennedy reached back to President Theodore Roosevelt’s Executive Order No. 989 after Marine Commandant Gen. David M. Shoup sent it over to his commander-in-chief with a memorandum about current Marine fitness programs and standards. Kennedy replied with a letter dated Jan. 31, 1963 thanking the general and asking if his Marines could take the same 50-mile challenge as Marines in 1908. Two Army Reserve officers, Lt. Col. Shane Cater and Maj. Kyle "Dutch" Dietrich, deployed to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait with the 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), completed the 50 miles on foot Feb. 14, 2021 and Feb. 15, 2021 in 15 hours and six minutes.
