Lantern Slide 50: Old Naval Observatory looking northeast. The time ball* mast can be seen on top of the 9.6-inch refractor dome. *Not used at Obs. After 1884, but at old State, War, & Navy Bldg. The wing to the south (right) housed the prime vertical (lantern slide #137). It also contained a storeroom and, after 1873, office space and the 26-inch refractor. The wing also housed for a time a 6.6-inch refraction circle (1848 – 1861). Photograph about 1888. The Frodsham clock, in the Observatory lobby now, was used in the prime vertical room from about 1850 to 1882 when it was replaced by Howard clock #627. It was bought in 1848 for $420.
