President Theodore Roosevelt directed all Marine lieutenants and captains to complete 50 miles in less than 20 hours over no more than three days in his December 1908 Executive Order No. 989. Roosevelt overcame childhood asthma through physical exercise and for the rest of his life he advocated for strenuous living. Army Reserve officers Lt. Col. Shane Cater and Maj. Kyle "Dutch" Dietrich completed 50 miles on foot around the camp in 15 hours and six minutes.
