Major Gen. Ronald L. Bailey, the 1st Marine Division commanding general, shows audiences a bottle of sand from Guadalcanal during a battle color rededication ceremony on the division parade field here, Aug. 30. The Marines demonstrated tenacity and valor at the battle of Guadalcanal, and the 1st Marine Division logo features the word “Guadalcanal” in honor of the battle. Bailey fastened 25 streamers to the battle color signifying various campaigns, expeditions, battles, and decorations presented to the division since its founding, from the occupation of Haiti in 1915 to Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The ceremony was directed by the commanding general of the 1st Marine Division as a part of the Commandant’s guidance to refocus Marines on their core values and identity.
