This Fort Riley Friday we continue our look at Marshall Army Airfield.
After serving as the post’s polo field, the "Fort Riley Aeroplane Landing Field" was created in 1921. After construction of basic facilities was completed in 1923, the field was named Marshall Field after Brigadier General Francis C. Marshall.
The Marshall Monument was erected in 1925 and still stands today on the west side of Ray Road between buildings 741A and 748. Constructed of native limestone, the monument's undated inscription reads simply, "MARSHALL FIELD, DEDICATED TO COLONEL FRANCIS C. MARSHALL, CAVALRY.” Marshall’s wartime promotion to Brigadier General in December, 1917, was temporary. He returned to the rank of Colonel in 1920.
