U.S. Army Sgt. Mario B. Mercer's expertise recently earned him a spot in the Army's Preventative Maintenance Magazine (also known as PS Magazine), as part of the "I Own This" campaign.
Having mastered his job skills as a wheeled vehicle mechanic, he studied other equipment so he could be of service if something needed repairs other than a wheeled vehicle. His diligence led him to become a subject matter expert on power generation equipment.
Mercer says the highlight of his career so far is earning the H8 additional skill identifier, officially becoming an expert in vehicle recovery operations. His long-term military goals are to pass on his knowledge to as many Soldiers as possible and eventually retire as a chief warrant officer. In the short-term, he aims to get promoted to staff sergeant and complete college.
He originally joined the military in 2015 for the travel opportunities and to "brighten his horizon." After deployment, he plans to spend time with his wife and his car, named Max. Like in his military duties, he enjoys working on vehicles and building motors. He says the best thing he has received this deployment, besides being nominated in the Preventative Maintenance Magazine, is a case of Cheerwine soda he got in a care package.
Mercer is currently deployed to the Middle East with Echo Company, 1-82nd Attack Reconnaissance Battalion.
