Description: Respirator, Lightweight, Half Tank (Model M)
Caption: This Respirator, Lightweight, Half Tank (Model M) was manufactured by Fabrikators Inc. of Boston, Mass. Increasing rates of polio in the early 1950s led to the development of this lightweight iron lung. This is a production version designed in 1952 by Syrrel Wilkes and J.F. Tomashefski of the U.S. Air Force School of Aviation Medicine. The iron lung, which had an aluminum hull, was used to transport polio patients on military ambulance aircraft, such as the Convair C-131 Samaritan and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules.
