This Fort Riley Friday we continue our look at some of the first permanent buildings constructed on Marshall Army Airfield.
In 1934, 26 new quarters were built on Fort Riley with 12 of those constructed at the airfield. Among them was the building at 760 Ray Road, a two-story 28-man barracks to house Air Corps non-commissioned officers and cooks.
Like other quarters built that year on the airfield, building 760 was constructed of brick and faced with buff-colored brick to match Hangar 741 constructed in 1932 across the street.
By 1942, building 760 had undergone minor alterations in its conversion to office space and an Exchange annex. In 1965, it was converted to a battalion headquarters. After being abandoned for decades, it became home to various elements of the 6025th Garrison Support Unit and the 346th MP Company from the Army Reserve.
Today, after a recently-completed extensive renovation with efforts to retain the historic features of the structure, building 760 houses the administrative portions of the U.S. Air Force Weather Squadron on post.
