Meet Dutch Maj. Bjorn Coppers, operations officer, 11th Air Assault Brigade. Coppers serves as the planning liaison between the Dutch and American forces in Romania for DEFENDER-Europe 21. As the primary liaison for Swift Response 21, Coppers helped highlight NATO’s ability to leverage multinational cooperation to insert ground forces rapidly and appropriately respond to a potential crisis anywhere in the world.
“It was great to be a part of a multinational effort,” said Coppers. “I had the opportunity to work with the 82nd Airborne staff and witness the experience and knowledge of their senior officers and NCOs." Swift Response is one of three training exercises during DEFENDER-Europe 21, and one of the premier military crisis response training events for multinational airborne forces in the world.
“We conduct DEFENDER-Europe exercises within NATO to enhance interoperability between the different countries,” said Coppers. “We learn from each other’s tactics and procedures to better insert large forces anywhere we need.”
DEFENDER-Europe 21 is a large-scale U.S. Army-led exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between the U.S., NATO allies and partner militaries. This year, more than 28,000 multinational forces from 26 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in 14 countries from the Baltics to the strategically important Balkans and Black Sea Region.
