210527-N-ND356-0001 NAPLES, Italy (May 27, 2021) On today’s day in history, May 27, 1942, Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism at Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941 by Adm. Chester W. Nimitz. Almost two years later, on November 24, 1943, he was killed when his ship was torpedoed during the invasion of the Gilbert Islands.
