Heavy equipment is used to move recently dredged up sand to other portions of the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area. The sand, which is being repurposed, was originally placed in the facility from dredging the navigation channels in the Hampton Roads region. The Craney Island facility is a 2,500-acre confined dredged material disposal site located in Portsmouth, VA., and provides a long-term material dredged from the channels and ports in the Hampton Roads area.
