Union Sgt. Benjamin Levy, the first Jewish American to receive the Medal of Honor, was a New York Soldier who was recognized for his actions to save his regimental colors and rally his unit, the 1st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, during the Battle of Glendale in June 1862. After his initial two-year service, Levy reenlisted in January 1864 and was severely wounded in the thigh during the Battle of the Wilderness, receiving a discharge due to disability in May 1865. He died July 20, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York. (U.S. National Guard courtesy photo)
