Meet U.S. Army Spc. Iris Silva,a native from Almada, Portugal and a combat engineer with the 541st Sapper Company, 19th Engineer Battalion at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Her military career choice resulted her in her working with the Bulgarian Armed Forces and the Defense Forces of Georgia at Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria. She and her team are needed to breach obstacles en route during a live-fire exercise as part of Saber Guardian 21, a linked exercise of DEFENDER-Europe 21. DEFENDER-Europe 21 is a large-scale U.S. Army-led exercise where U.S. forces work together with NATO allies and partners through various operations in order to prepare for any potential threats if they ever come.
“It’s probably the best decision I have made,” said Silva. “It’s definitely a career path that is not for everybody. You have to be one of the toughest for this career path.”

DEFENDER-Europe 21 is a large-scale U.S. Army-led exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between the U.S., NATO allies and partner militaries. This year, more than 28,000 multinational forces from 26 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in more than a dozen countries from the Baltics to the strategically important Balkans and Black Sea Region.
