U.S. Army Spc. Mario Clavel, a UH-60 Blackhawk crew chief assigned to Alpha Company “Aces,” 1st Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment, part of 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, stops for a sunset portrait (UGH, the worst part of portraits is the caption… any rewrite recommendations are valued) following maritime operations over the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea during exercise Swift Response, part of DEFENDER-Europe 21, May 5, 2021. Mustang suits, as Clavel is wearing, insulate a crew member’s body temperature should they egress out of the aircraft over water.
DEFENDER-Europe 21 is a large-scale U.S. Army-led exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between the U.S., NATO allies and partner militaries. This year, more than 28,000 multinational forces from 26 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in over a dozen countries from the Baltics to the strategically important Balkans and Black Sea Region.
