This Fort Riley Friday we’re back out at the old packer’s camp near Camp Funston.
Building 1022 Huebner Road opened in 1914 as the blacksmith shop for the packer’s camp (see last week’s Fort Riley Friday.) The farriers at the packer’s camp were in charge of hoof care of the horses and mules in the pack trains.
Building 1022 was built with limestone walls, stone and concrete foundation, slate roof and wood floors. It had a capacity of four forges. Blacksmiths used forges for heating and shaping horseshoes.
The pack trains and associated personnel remained at Fort Riley until border differences began with Mexico. By 1930, building 1022 had been converted to NCO quarters, according to Fort Riley Directorate of Public Works maintenance documents.
Today, 1022 Huebner serves as home to the Game Warden section of the Directorate of Emergency Services.
