210611-N-AY957-XXX GROTON, Conn. (June 11, 2021) – Sailors attached to the Virginia-class submarine USS Vermont (SSN 792) conduct steam suit training with Office of Naval Research (ONR) personnel at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn., June 11. The steam suits -- sponsored by TechSolutions, ONR Global’s rapid-response science and technology program -- provide protection for Sailors in the event pressurized steam lines aboard a submarine rupture. Such ruptures can leak steam at extremely high temperatures, potentially resulting in severe injury or death. The origin of the new, improved steam suits came directly from a Sailor in the fleet, who submitted his idea to TechSolutions. (U.S. Navy photo by Petty Officer 3rd Christian Bianchi/RELEASED)
