Vincent Speranza, World War II Veteran and machine gunner from the 501st Infantry Regiment, describes the extreme conditions he and his fellow paratroopers faced during the Battle of the Bulge to junior paratroopers of the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, during a visit to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, July 15, 2021. Speranza traveled to JBER to meet and share stories about his World War II experiences with the paratroopers of the 1-501st PIR and the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, “Spartan Brigade.” The Spartan Brigade is the only airborne infantry brigade combat team in the Arctic and Pacific theaters, providing the combatant commander with the unique capability to project an expeditionary force by air.
