U.S. Marines with the burial detail, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort S.C., perform a burial ceremony for retired U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. LaSalle Vaughn Sr. at the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, S.C., Sept. 26, 2012. Vaughn Sr., one of the original Montford Point Marines, enlisted in 1943 after President Roosevelt established a Presidential Directive affording African Americans the opportunity to serve in the Marine Corps.
