View of the Four Chaplains Monument at St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny, N.J., July 1, 2021. The four chaplains – Methodist minister the Reverend George L. Fox, Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Catholic priest Father John P. Washington, and Reformed Church in America minister the Reverend Clark V. Poling – were all U.S. Army first lieutenants who died when the troop ship, United States Army Transport Dorchester was sunk by a German submarine Feb. 3, 1943. After the attack, the chaplains helped evacuate the troops off the ship. When the supply of life jackets ran out, the chaplains gave their own life jackets to Soldiers. According to eyewitness accounts, they were last seen arms linked, saying prayers and singing hymns as the ship sank. The sculpture was conceived by Timothy Schmalz and was dedicated Feb. 3, 2013 – the 70th anniversary of the Dorchester’s sinking. St. Stephen’s was Washington’s last assignment prior to his entering the chaplain corps. (New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs photo by Mark C. Olsen)
