Moving can be a daunting task, especially when you are moving to a new country not knowing what you will need. When the Afghans first arrived at Fort Pickett, Virginia, they did not have a lot with them. Thankfully, the local community and retail stores pitched in and donated items to be given out to the Afghan evacuees. The items consist of basic needs such as hygiene products and clothing. The ones giving out the donations is 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment.
"As far as the distribution center goes we're responsible for getting the donations, processing them, and getting them out to the Afghans," said Second Lieutenant Walker Schmitzer, a Soldier from 1st Battalion, 504th Infantry Regiment, Delta Company, 2nd Platoon Leader. "It's very rewarding, just knowing these people come from a place where there is a lot of need, and every day we can lessen that need a little bit.
