Lt. Col. Joseph Mickley, the commander of 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), and Nasir, a former translator for the International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan, pose for a photo Oct. 14, 2021, at Fort McCoy, Wis. Nasir served as a Dari and Pashtu translator for Mickley in 2011. The two met for the first time since then here on Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, during Operation Allies Welcome. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
