Capt. James R. McIver, Naval Station Newport commanding officer, and leaders from the state, NextEra Energy and local colleges break ground at McAllister Point Nov. 5, 2021 for a new solar array to be built there. The former installation landfill will be one of two sites NextEra Energy will erect solar voltaic arrays to generate clean energy for community partners including a number of colleges and universities in the ocean state. This opportunity was made possible through an enhanced use lease with the Navy to re-imagine and re-purpose some under-utilized properties at NAVTSTA Newport.
