This Fort Riley Friday we continue our look at houses around Cavalry Parade Field.
Quarters 21 on Sheridan Avenue was built in 1858 with limestone walls and foundation, wood floors, and a shingle and tin roof.
The duplex was severely damaged in a fire in the 1930s and was completely reconstructed. At the time of the fire, quarters 21 and 24 Sheridan Ave.
were the only two officer’s quarters remaining from the original 1855 plan of the post.
While 24 Sheridan Ave. has become known as the Custer House, it is known that the Custers did not live in quarters 24 but lived instead in quarters 21.
