Pictured clockwise from top left in 1946 around the time of their graduation from boot camp: Pvt. Richard Trego, 18, Pvt. Dan Truex, 18, Pvt. Leslie Simmons, 18, and Pvt. Harry R. Turner, 17. Trego, Simmons and Turner were among the victims of the December 1946 plane crash that killed 32 U.S. Marines and remains Mount Rainier's greatest tragedy. Truex, turned away at boarding even though he had orders, is believed to have escaped death after Simmons, who hitched a ride on the cargo plane to surprise his family for Christmas, took Truex's place.
