NASA researcher (Sharon Beskenis) checks out a research pallet in the NASA 757 research aircraft before deployment to Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport. The month-long series of tests are designed to prove concepts for safely increasing airport capacity in low visibility situations. At runway approach, computer-generated graphics outline the correct runway and its precise location on a glass visor mounted between the pilot and cockpit windshield. Upon contact with the ground, aircraft position is shown on an electronic moving map on the instrument panel, as well as other active aircraft at the terminal. Positioning is via global positioning system satellites and an airport layout database. The program, dubbed Low Visibility Landing and Surface Operations, is led by NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA. Other team members include NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA, and the Federal Aviation Administration.
