Mark Ivanisin, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District operations supervisor, loads his oxygen tank into the passenger side of his car after a physical therapy appointment at a pulmonary rehab center in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, Dec. 17, 2021. Earlier this year, Ivanisin spent 52 days in the hospital fighting for his life against the COVID-19 virus and the pneumonia that followed. Ivanisin said the doctors called him a “one percenter,” meaning that 99 percent of patients who had been hit by COVID-19 as severely as him did not survive. Ivanisin's doctors credited his survival to the vaccine he received in March. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District photo by Michel Sauret)
